Barefoot Lakes’ new park, annual race bring nature to your front door.

FIRESTONE – Journeys to vivacious Colorado living begin in Barefoot Lakes, a master-planned and nature-infused community 15 minutes east of Longmont and situated perfectly between Denver and Loveland in Firestone. A premier destination for home owners seeking to drink deeply from the well of Colorado outdoor recreation, Barefoot Lakes features miles of groomed trails, two lakes totaling more than 100 serene acres and new this fall, Peninsula Park, a 12-acre natural haven. Envisioned by Barefoot Lakes’ developer Brookfield Residential in collaboration with the Town of Firestone, Peninsula Park will welcome the community with a grand opening on Sept. 9, in conjunction with the second annual Barefoot Lakes 5K/10K race. This year the race will partner with Endurance Race Series (ERS), dubbed Colorado’s largest trail series.

“Barefoot Lakes is everything Coloradoans love most about the state, and Peninsula Park and the race encapsulate that,” said Ethan Demby, director of integration at Art + Business ONE, the brand and marketing firm for Barefoot Lakes. “The developer, Brookfield Residential, its land planners and landscape architects are creating a natural haven where people live where they play in harmony with the flora and the fauna. This focus on native and natural creates enhanced environments for wildlife.” The water-wise grasses and flowers at Barefoot Lakes have been meticulously selected, producing swathes of native and naturalized grasses in the summer, pastel wildflowers in spring and cold-friendly flowers in autumn.

Peninsula Park grand opening: Within nature, without being far from anything

Peninsula Park ushers nature to one’s door, with spectacular panoramas of the Front Range towering above the community’s lakes and open lawns. Wildflower-edged trails meander from the park, around the lakes and through WaterSide neighborhood, the first phase of Barefoot Lakes. WaterSide neighborhood currently offers 199 homes by three of Colorado’s most distinctive builders: Brookfield Residential, Richmond American Homes and CalAtlantic Homes.

Peninsula Park is designed for residents to savor “being within nature without being far from anything,” Demby said. “You will see people jogging, biking, strolling with kids or watching a blue heron take flight from one of the islands on the lake.”

Peninsula Park includes an amphitheater to take in a show or concert, rent the space or stargaze, as well as a fitness island with outdoor exercise equipment and playground to foster “natural, un-programmed play,” Demby said. Rock scrambles, freestanding stairs and broad lawns unleash Colorado’s spirited side. WaterSide’s pocket park similarly furnishes picnic tables for impromptu gatherings, embankment slides and perennial gardens. “Barefoot Lakes is a place of multiple journeys, and multiple opportunities to play are here, whether it’s a journey to a new home or a journey down our nature trails and across our lakes,” Demby said.

Barefoot Lakes annual 5K/10K: A step ahead

Peninsula Park’s grand opening will coincide with the Barefoot Lakes Second Annual 5K/10K race on Sept. 9. Jeff Stoner, owner and director of ERS, the trail series partnering with Barefoot Lakes, said, “When we are researching a prospective race event, we look at how friendly is the site to the runner and to families and kids, and we look for good trails, scenery and parks. We want accessibility. Barefoot Lakes has all this and more.” Both the 5K and 10K courses start and finish at Peninsula Park and bestow 180-degree views of the water and the Front Range. “This is somewhere you want to take your family,” he said.

The race is open to everyone, from children to elite runners. “We are happy to partner with Barefoot Lakes and support One World Running,” Stoner said. The race’s primary nonprofit cause, One World Running delivers exercise gear and shoes to people in developing countries. As with last year, race participants (who, yes, must wear shoes to run the Barefoot Lakes race) are encouraged to bring an extra pair of sneakers to the event to support One World Running or donate their trail runners postrace. Free race swag includes flip-flops, T-shirts and finishers’ gifts.

The festivities ramp up after the race. Stoner plans a vendor village embodying the active lifestyle, games for kids, music and plenty of chow and beverages. Additionally, race participants are invited to take in some air conditioning and exquisite vistas with a tour of eight model homes at Barefoot Lakes.

The Cove: New recreation center opening at Barefoot Lakes

Barefoot Lakes’ commitment to “live where you play” goes inside with the newest community feature: The Cove at Barefoot Lakes. “The Cove captures the reason why people move here,” Demby said. Connected trails that steer around the lakes and through the WaterSide neighborhood will draw residents to The Cove and provide a rest stop for those hitting the trails or a destination for indoor-exercise days. The 7,000-square foot facility will include a beach-style entry outdoor pool and lavish fitness and gathering centers.

Three incredible builders at Barefoot Lakes

The wonder and creativity of the landscape, the race, Peninsula Park and up-and-coming Cove recreation center culminate in the beauty and comfort of the homes at Barefoot Lakes. Brookfield Residential, in collaboration with the designers at Design Workshop, exuberantly incorporate natural materials into the look and feel of the community’s surrounding landscaping, including native stone in retaining walls and boulders in play areas. The home sites include 20 floor plans from three acclaimed home builders.

Brookfield Residential offers two series of home plans. The Avenue Portfolio, from the mid $300s, is a reinterpretation of urban-style, bungalow homes. The porches are big.
