Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, and located just 25 miles northwest of downtown Denver, the Chautauqua Park neighborhood in Boulder is one of the most desirable places to live. Known for its vibrant community, boundless outdoor activities, and architecturally appealing houses, here are five reasons to consider Chautauqua Park for your next move.
Rich history & preservation
The “Chautauqua Movement” became popular in the late 1800s, and the first Chautauqua was located on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in New York. The concept of “Chautauqua” was to gather as a group for education combined with entertainment. President Theodore Roosevelt was a repeat visitor of a Chautauqua Institution and once noted it was “a source of positive strength and refreshment of mind and body to come to meet a typical American gathering like this.”
Chautauqua Park in Boulder originated in 1898 when Boulder City leaders, the Gulf & Southern Railway, and the Texas Regents partnered to package a teacher’s school with a Chautauqua in Boulder. In eleven short weeks, the City of Boulder built a dining hall, auditorium, and a water system. The cottages at Chautauqua, many built by John Blanchard in the Craftsman style, were constructed beginning in 1899. You will still find a majority of the original buildings at Chautauqua, which adds to its illustrious charm.
Awards for events and culture
As mentioned in a BizWest article, Boulder’s Chautauqua Park has received national recognition as this year’s ELGL Knope Award winner, named after Leslie Knope, the character from the show Parks and Recreation.
“Colorado Chautauqua is a place our community comes to listen to music in the auditorium, stay in a historic cottage, have fun in the park, enjoy beautiful views, and hike on amazing trails,” said Ali Rhodes, parks director for the city. “Winning the Knope Award is our opportunity to share Chautauqua on a national scale. The entire site is a testament to a long-standing partnership, with CCA and the city working together to provide a place where there is something for everyone.” Chautauqua Park hosts year-round events with art, culture, and entertainment for people of all ages.
