BOULDER – Most of us have dreamed that big city dream. At one point or another, you’ve probably thought that your city was getting too small, too laid back, and fantasized about leaving for a bigger one where the grass is greener. There are a number of reasons why people want to move to a bigger, busier area: for some it’s all about career growth, for others – personal discovery. However, this big city dream does not always work out right for each and every one who’s ever dreamt it. For every success story that has sprung from that big city dream, there’s a heart broken or a spirit crushed.

But then there’s Boulder, Colorado  – that one place that a more and more people swear, has it all.

Boulder has become the United States’ newest object of that big city dream – but better. It’s a place that offers a lot of opportunities, but preserves one’s quality of life like only a small town can.  It could even be the antidote to those whose heart has already been broken and whose spirit has already been crushed by that big city dream.

Technically, Boulder is not a city. It is both a county – one of the 64 within the State of Colorado – and a municipality/town. At 66 square kilometers, the total land area of Boulder is far from the more popular big cities: Los Angeles (1,302 square kilometers); New York (789 square kilometers); Chicago City (606.1 square kilometers). But what it lacks in official title (as mentioned, Boulder is no city) and sprawling size, it makes up for in everything else that matters.

But what specifically is it, that makes Boulder a good place to move to? An infographic from the Tenge Law Firm of Colorado called “10 Reasons Why You Should Move to Boulder” presents us with several compelling reasons. For the sake of emphasis and brevity, let’s try to encapsulate those reasons into 3 major points.

Healthy lifestyle
Boulder is surrounded by nature. It is the home of popular tourist attractions including The Flatirons, Flagstaff Mountain, and the Boulder Canyon. It also boasts of hike trails that cater to all levels of expertise such as the Anne U White Trail and the Shadow Canyon Ridge Trail. As testament to its terrain predisposed to athleticism, in 2016, Boulder produced five new Olympians: Mara Abbott (Cycling), Emma Coburn (Track & Field), Taylor Phinney (Cycling), Jenny Simpson (Track & Field), Chloe Woodruff (Moutain Biking). In Boulder, not only could you lose those few pounds you’ve been trying to get rid of, you can even train to become an Olympian if you dream big enough.

Academic/career growth
Boulder houses one of the country’s most competitive universities  – the University of Colorado. Government research facilities have also stationed in town, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). In terms of unemployment rate, Boulder scores 50% lower than the national average. Meanwhile, in terms of entrepreneurship, Boulder has been touted as the country’s No. 1 in “The Best Cities for Entrepreneurs.” All of these contribute to Boulder’s growing reputation as a place where entrepreneurial spirit and intellectual curiosity thrive.

Culture and the arts
From the morbidly fun “Frozen Dead Guy Festival” to the more wholesome events happening at The Rayback Collective, Boulder does not run out of cultural and artistic highlights for all tastes and preferences. Foodies can get their fill from the wide options available along the Pearl Street Mall and its adjacent areas. Beer connoisseurs can have a taste of a wide range of craft beers from places such as The Rowdy Mermaid. Literature lovers can head to Innisfree Poetry Bookstore for rare poetry book finds and poetry readings. Yes, Boulder is, kind of, Colorado’s very own Brooklyn.

If you ask the locals, these are just the tip of the iceberg of what Boulder can offer. Good things often come at a price however, and Boulder has been known to be an expensive place to live in. But then again, if living there allows you to live better, do more, is it expensive still?
